Discussing the riots and ensuring a safe environment for all students
Many children and young people, as well as those working in education settings, will have been impacted in different ways by recent riots and violent disorder across the country.
It’s important that education settings create a supportive, calm environment where students of all faiths and backgrounds feel secure, safe and valued and provide a safe space for discussing violent disorder with students when appropriate. We have published a new blog on Educate Against Hate to support those working in education to hold difficult discussions with learners about extremism, teach students about online safety and mis-and disinformation and access protective security guidance for education settings. Launch of Curriculum Assessment Review
On Friday 19 July 2024 the Government launched the wide ranging Curriculum and Assessment Review to help drive high and rising school standards, which are at the heart of government's mission to break down barriers to opportunity.
The Independ review will be chaired by Professor Becky Francis CBE, and expert in education policy, including curriculum and social inequality- supported by an expert panel.
Removal of Ofsted's single headline grades for schools
The department of Education announced that Ofsted's single headline grades will be scrapped for state schools due to be inspected this year with immediate effect. A new report card will be introduced in September 2025 to support the delivery of high and rising standards for every child. Removal of single headline grades for other providers Ofsted inspects will follow and we will be working closely with all sectors to develop our plans
Wales is set to become the first UK nation to make teaching of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) histories and experiences mandatory in the school curriculum.
